So, for the first time in a while there are several songs I actually LOOK FORWARD to when I listen.  As you can imagine, working for a radio station means hearing the same songs OVER and OVER, so many of them burn out SO quick, BUT…  “Down On Me” by Jeremih and 50 Cent – HOT.  Christina Perri – “Jar of Hearts” = SO pretty.   LOVE them!

AMERICAN IDOL – for once,  I agree with most of the decisions.   I don’t think the country kid will make it very far – he sounds great on country songs, but AI is WAY more than country, and I don’t think he’s versatile enough.  THANK YOU SO MUCH for getting rid of the goofy junebug karaoke guy.  AND the dark haired girl that ABSOLUTELY BUTCHERED “Criminal” by Fiona Apple.  My favs – Lauren Elaina, Jacob Lusk, and the two guys with beards.

Ok, so I know I have a propensity for complaining about things that irk me, but… I experienced something new yesterday, and I’m wondering if I’m crazy, or is this just a sign of the times, or what…?  Here’s what happened.

So I’m having lunch yesterday at a popular sub chain, and they have music playing through the speakers.  Variety – nothing offensive.  These two girls (I say girls, but…. they were in their late 20’s/early 30’s) sit at the booth next to me.  One of them takes out her cell phone and just turns on her own music, loud enough that it could be heard in the whole restaurant.  Thuggy kind of hip-hop, swearing and all.  Now, don’t just jump to conclusions – I was a hip-hop club DJ for YEARS, and LOVE the genre, so the style of music in inconsequential… the POINT is – this is a PUBLIC place, AND it already had music playing.  Is it rude, or am I just overreacting?

Your thoughts?

The New Year

Posted in: DJ Shakes

2011 has proven to be an interesting year so far.  Less than one month in so far, but already I found out that the school that I teach at (yes, I teach school during the week, which is why you only hear me on the weekends) is going to be closing after this school year, so next year I’ll have to find a new place to work after this June.  So that sucks.  On the OTHER hand, my band, Lake Effect, has recently signed with a management company, and we are already booking tons of new shows.  I sing and play guitar in the band, and it’s my FAVORITE thing to do!

Kiss continues to dominate, and I’m glad I’ve been able to be a part of this airstaff for almost 4 years now.  Can’t believe it’s been that long…  Don’t worry though – they still treat me like it’s my first day on the job, so… I won’t get a big head about it.  :)

Packers are going to the BIG DANCE!!!  I’ve been a lifelong Green Bay fan, and am SO glad they’re going, BUT… I’m not particularly a fan of playing specific songs like “like a cheesehead” on the air… Maybe posting it on our website or something would be appropriate, so then it would always be available to you if you WANTED to hear it.  I think that would be enough.

No groundbreaking new songs I’m into right now either.  To be honest, my band just started playing “Animal” by Neon Trees, so I am back into that one, but other than that, same old same old.

GO PACK GO…

Ke$ha…

Posted in: DJ Shakes

So, it was actually a Katy Perry video I saw first, but it was kinda racey, so I’m posting Ke$ha instead. These guys called “Key of Awesome” have a ton of these parodies…

enjoy!

Hope your holidays are fun and exciting! Being the only person in the building for the last 2 days has been an interesting spin… Just so you KNOW you had a good holiday, here’s how I spent MY last 2 days…
1. Woke up early (pre-7am) 12/24 to a phone call from my ex-wife. This wouldn’t have been AS bad, except I was out partying with Haze and Matt Cooper the night before…
2. Did laundry. Specifically, washed vomit out of my son’s sheet and pillowcase.
3. Watched Scrooged. By myself. In its entirety.
4. Scrubbed bathroom floors.
5. Did more laundry.
6. Came to work. On air 2-7.
7. Went home, watched Star Wars marathon, falling asleep before Annakin Skywalker even becomes Darth Vader.
8. Woke up several times to random early morning texts saying “Merry Christmas” (some of which I had NO IDEA who they were from, but you can’t really be mad cuz it’s Christmas)
9. Watched “A Christmas Story” for like the 7the time this week.
10. Went to my grandmother’s house for a family get-together. My uncle DOES make some awesome punch… but I did the cliche thing and ate WAY to much.
11. Went to my parents’ house and watched “National Treasure” and helped my sister try to register her “Nook” on the Barnes and Noble website which was inexplicably “down for maintenance” on Christmas Day.
12. Came back to work, where I will be until midnight when Christmas is over.

There you have it, a breakdown of my inane existence. Proof positive that your life is more exciting than mine!
Merry Christmas anyway!

AAAAHHHHHHH a nice relaxing Saturday night in the studio.  Ok, so it’s non-stop answering phones, texts, e-mails, and facebook messages, PLUS making sure 3 stations stay on the air, but it’s still less stressful than the REST of my week.

So Christmas is coming soon, and whether you celebrate it or not, it’s definitely a great time of the year.  I must confess, I’ve been known to be a bit of a grinch now and then, but since I’ve had to have Christmas as a DAD it’s been so much more rewarding.  Sitting down with my boys and watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas” has new meaning.  My absolute FAVORITE Christmas special is “Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas” so if you’ve never seen it, CHECK IT OUT!

So, of course, knowing how much I LOVE the holidays,  I’ve been scheduled to work Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day, so… I guess you have the opportunity to spend your holidays with me!

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and all that good stuff!

In case you need to get into the spirit of Thanksgiving (AND you have 20 minutes to sit and watch a video).  Happy Thanksgiving to you!

ahhhhhh… so i’m back in the studio after a couple weeks off.  weather is getting COLD, which is always depressing.  i mean, i KNOW we live in WISCONSIN and everything, AND it’s been a REALLY mild autumn so far, but…  lower temperatures always depress me.   BUT…  for the first time in a LOOOOOONG time, i’m really looking FORWARD to getting into the christmas spirit!  our sister station will be playing holiday music, and my kids are 7 and 3, which is the PERFECT age for all sorts of christmas fun!  (i actually already took them to see santa – i know, it’s like a SIN before thanksgiving, but… whatever, the line was super short!)  i may even invest in some decent lights for the house this year!

there are some SMOKIN new songs on the air right now – my favs are:  bass down low – dev feat the cataracs,  the time – black eyed peas, hey baby – pitbull and t-pain, and i even kinda like willow’s whip my hair.

oh, and i killed a gigantic spider in the studio.  BIG.  just sayin…

PLUS i saw this video the other day and it haunts me. you’re welcome…

happy holidays…

Autumn…

Posted in: DJ Shakes

Although it’s NOT my favorite SEASON of the year, some of my FAVORITE things take place in fall.

1.  HAUNTED HOUSES!!!!  I LOVE to go to haunted houses, although I’ve been single the last couple of halloweens, and it’s not the same without a cute little honey tugging on your arm.  Which ones are your favorites?  Post a comment and let me know – I wanna check some out before they’re gone!

2.  COLLEGE FOOTBALL.  I know, it’s such a “guy thing,” but I just think it’s so much more entertaining than professional, plus my two favorite teams are doing well this year (BADGERS of course, and South Carolina Gamecocks).

3.  Thanksgiving.  Great family holiday.  Enough said.

Hope your autumn is good so far, and thanks for checking out my blog!  -shakes

Number One:

Ladies, PLEASE take this bit of information to heart, and consider amending your “girl rules.”  It is NOT COOL for a girl to “claim” a guy she’s interested in so that none of her friends can date him.  Really, if I want to hook up with you, you’ll KNOW it.  If I want one of your friends, but you’ve already told them they CAN’T be with me because YOU like me…  that’s just WRONG.  THIS  INCLUDES FAMILY MEMBERS!  It’s not MY fault you’re related!  Guys don’t do this.  We might complain about it,  and have hurt feelings, but… seriously, ladies – this is NOT cool!

Number Two:

If you’re gross enough to smoke cigarettes, and you choose to do so in your car, USE THE ASHTRAY FOR YOUR FRICKIN CIGARETTE BUTTS!  I HATE it when people throw cigarette butts out car windows.  If you’re lame enough to smoke in your car, you SHOULD have a bunch of cigarette butts all over your disgusting self!

NUMBER THREE:

there are some AWESOME  songs in the Kiss rotation right now…  “Forget You” by Cee Lo, “If I Had You” by Adam Lambert, “Take a Picture” by Taio Cruz and Kesha, “Like a G6″ by Far East Movement…  I had to turn the speakers UP in the studio SEVERAL times tonight!

That’s about it for now… GO PACK GO!
